Abundant solar energy resources and significant growth in photovoltaic installed capacity

The United States has huge solar resource potential, with many areas receiving abundant sunlight year-round. Solar power has become the largest source of energy in the United States in terms of new installed capacity in the first five months.

As of the end of May 2024, the installed capacity of solar energy in the United States reached 113.84GW, accounting for 8.78% of the total power generation capacity of 1296.08GW. It is expected that 951 solar projects will qualify as “high probability additions” between June 2024 and May 2027, with a total capacity of 89.951GW. This installed capacity will account for 69.8% of the new installed capacity in the United States, far exceeding the total new installed capacity of wind power and natural gas.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) predicts that by 2024, U.S. project developers will add 36.4GW of solar power generation capacity, accounting for 58% of all new installed capacity in the U.S. power industry.
