Highways — a new direction for the development of solar photovoltaics

Admin

Researchers from China Academy of Sciences, Tsinghua University, China Academy of Geosciences and Columbia University found that solar energy coverage of global highways can meet more than 60% of the global annual energy demand by studying the possibility of installing solar panels on highways and main roads. The research result titled 'Roofing Highways With Solar Panels Substantially Reduces Carbon Emissions and Traffic Losses' was published in the journal Earth's Future.

There are over 3.2 million kilometers of highways worldwide, and the research team calculated the cost and benefits of constructing a solar panel network using polycrystalline solar panels with 250W capacity.

It is found that if the global highways can be covered with solar panels, it could produce 17578 TWh of electricity annually, exceeding 60% of global electricity consumption in 2023 and more than four times the annual energy output of the United States.

It could also reduce CO2 emissions by 28.78% and lower the global traffic accident mortality rate by 10.8%.
