Scientists from Poland have developed a new type of anti-icing coating for photovoltaic panels, which is based on transparent silicone epoxy resin and modified with two or three kinds of functionalized organic silicides with customizable structure-octahedral silicate (OSS) to enhance the anti-icing performance.

Researchers created five different coating samples to investigate their icephobic properties by measuring the adhesion force (IA) of ice and the freezing delay time (FDT) of water droplets. They found that compared to unmodified samples, samples modified with bifunctional and trifunctional octasilicate esters for silicone epoxy coatings showed a decrease in IA and a significant extension in FDT. It can be seen that modification can indeed improve anti icing performance.
