The UK National Energy System Operator (NESO) has released its Clean Power 2030 Advice to Government, proposing that the UK's solar power generation should double by 2030 and recommending the deployment of 4.6 GW annually starting from 2025 to achieve the net zero target.

As of September 31, 2024, the latest capacity data released by the UK government is 17.1 GW. NESO believes that to achieve a clean power system by 2030, it is necessary to install approximately 120GW to 220GW of power generation and energy storage capacity through a combination of various technologies.
In addition, NESO specifically mentioned grid connection reform in its recommendations to the government, proposing that the standards and processes for UK grid connection queues should be reduced and reordered, shifting from a "first come, first served" approach to prioritizing projects based on project readiness, grid location, and technical requirements to accelerate transmission level connections.
NESO analysis states that achieving the UK government's goal of clean energy by 2030 is a 'huge challenge', and in the implementation process, overall system costs should not be increased. Consumers' electricity bills can be reduced by improving energy efficiency. Furthermore, the goal can also be achieved by significantly reducing the time required for obtaining planning approval for projects in the UK, increasing digitalization, and reforming investment support schemes.
